The Story

1
Born in 1936 in Vilnius, then Poland, Yusuf Hamied grew up in Bombay, where his Indian Muslim father and Lithuanian Jewish mother, both wartime survivors, shaped his multicultural perspective.
2
๐ŸŽ“ Between 1954 and 1960, Hamied earned a BA, MA, and PhD in chemistry from Christ's College, Cambridge, famously still consulting his original Cambridge notebooks decades later for drug synthesis.
3๐Ÿงช In 1961, he founded the Indian Drug Manufacturers Association, catalyzing the 1970 Indian Patents Act that patented processes, not molecules, revolutionizing India's pharmaceutical industry.
4๐ŸŒ In September 2000, Hamied stunned the global health community by announcing he could produce AIDS drug cocktails for $1 per day, slashing prices to 20 cents by 2011 and expanding treatment to over six million patients in developing countries.
