✨ A detail that surprised us
The PARAM 8000, developed under Bhatkar’s leadership in 1991, was created using Indian hardware and software components during a time when India faced technology embargoes.
1. In 1991, at Pune’s Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, Vijay Bhatkar led the creation of PARAM 8000 — India’s leap into supercomputing during an era dominated by Western technology.
2. 🌐 By 1998, he piloted PARAM 10000, pushing India into the ranks of nations with powerful parallel computing capabilities, enabling complex simulations critical for science and defense.
3. In 2000, Bhatkar was awarded the Padma Shri, recognizing his pioneering work that laid the foundation for India’s indigenous high-performance computing infrastructure.
4. 🏛 Between 2012 and 2017, he chaired the Board of Governors at IIT Delhi, influencing one of India’s premier technology institutes during a crucial phase of its academic expansion.
5. In 2017, he became Chancellor of Nalanda University in Bihar, reviving an ancient seat of learning with a vision to blend technology and humanities in modern education.
6. 🚀 Currently, Bhatkar is driving India’s push towards exascale supercomputing, aiming to harness the power of quintillions of calculations per second through the National Knowledge Network.
7. He founded the National Param Supercomputing Facility (NPSF), which transformed supercomputing access by deploying the Garuda grid across India’s scientific community.
8. ❓ How will Vijay Bhatkar’s vision of exascale computing redefine India’s scientific and defense frontiers in the coming decades?
