Harry Verrier Holman Elwin was a British-born Indian anthropologist, ethnologist and tribal activist. He is best known for his early work with the Baigas and Gonds of Orissa and Madhya Pradesh in central India. He later also worked on the tribals of several North East Indian states especially North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA).

In 1927, Verrier Elwin left his role as a chaplain at Merton College, Oxford, to join the austere Christa Seva Sangha in Poona, adopting khadi and vegetarianism to immerse himself in Indian culture.

🌲 By 1932, Elwin and Shamrao Hivale ventured deep into the Mandla district jungles, living among the Baigas and Gonds for over two decades, producing some of India's earliest anthropological tribal studies.

4After India’s independence, in 1947, Elwin adopted Indian citizenship and was appointed by Prime Minister Nehru as an adviser on tribal affairs for the North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA), shaping policies for Arunachal Pradesh's indigenous peoples.
