โ€œ

Kurien initially sought to study metallurgical engineering but was redirected by a government scholarship to dairy engineering, which led him to spearhead India's White Revolution.

The Story

1
In 1949, Verghese Kurien was assigned by the Indian government to revive a failing experimental creamery in Anand, Gujarat, where he founded the Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers' Union in 1950, which later became Amul.
2
๐ŸŒŸ In 1965, Kurien took charge of the newly created National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), which launched Operation Flood, transforming India from a milk importer to the world's largest milk producer by 1998.
3By organizing over three million milk producers into cooperatives, Kurien eliminated middlemen, enabling farmers to directly control procurement, processing, and marketing of milk, a model that reshaped rural economies.
4๐ŸŒ Kurien's cooperative model extended beyond dairy, influencing the edible oils industry and inspiring similar cooperative movements in countries across Asia and Africa by the 1980s.
