A detail that
surprised us

“

Vasant Gowariker’s monsoon forecasting model was the first indigenous system in India to accurately predict the annual monsoon, a feat achieved without modern satellite data in the 1980s.

The Story

1
🌍 In 1950s Kolhapur, Vasant Gowariker left India to study chemical engineering in England, eventually co-developing the Garner-Gowariker theory analyzing heat and mass transfer—a foundation for his later work in space and weather.
2
🚀 By the late 1960s, Gowariker worked at Thumba, Kerala, where ISRO’s early rocket program operated from a church building, pioneering India's solid propellant development under Vikram Sarabhai’s guidance.
3In 1979, Gowariker became Director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, steering key projects until 1985, a period marked by ISRO’s shift towards self-reliance in space technology.
4🌦️ Between 1985 and 1990, he built India’s first indigenous monsoon forecast model that successfully predicted seasonal rains, a breakthrough for agriculture-dependent India.
