In 1948, V. R. Krishna Iyer was jailed for a month in Malabar on a fabricated charge, after protesting police torture while giving legal aid to communists, marking his early defiance against state oppression.

๐ In 1957, as an independent candidate backed by the Communist Party of India, he won from Thalassery and became Kerala's Home, Law, and Social Welfare Minister, pioneering legal aid for the poor and prison reforms.
