Vasudev Kalkunte Aatre is an Indian scientist and former head of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), India's premier defence research and development organization. In that capacity, he also served as the Scientific Advisor to the Minister of Defence. He is a recipient of the Padma Vibhushan award.

In 1961, V. K. Aatre graduated with a BE in electrical engineering from University of Visvesvaraya College of Engineering, Bangalore, beginning a path that led him from India to Canada and back.

🌍 Between 1967 and 1980, he worked as a professor at Technical University of Nova Scotia, Halifax, blending academic rigor with practical engineering skills.
3In 1980, Aatre joined DRDO’s Naval Physical & Oceanographic Laboratory in Cochin and rose to become its director by 1984, steering critical defense research projects.
4🚀 By February 2000, he replaced Abdul Kalam as DRDO’s director general and became Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister George Fernandes, managing defense R&D at the highest level.
