The Story

1
🌌 In 1966, after working as a postdoctoral associate at MIT and assistant professor at the University of Texas, Udupi Ramachandra Rao returned to India to join the Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad, marking a pivotal shift from cosmic ray experiments to satellite technology development.
2
🚀 By 1975, under Rao's leadership, India launched Aryabhata, its first satellite, designed and fabricated domestically, a landmark event that put India on the global space map.
3Rao’s expertise with NASA Pioneer and Explorer spacecraft in the 1960s helped him establish the continuous nature of the solar wind and its geomagnetic effects using Mariner 2 data, a discovery critical to space science.
4🌍 As ISRO Chairman from 1984 to 1994, Rao accelerated the development of India's Geostationary Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) and initiated the cryogenic engine technology program in 1991, despite geopolitical challenges like the USSR’s collapse.
