Tirunellai Narayana Iyer Seshan was an Indian civil servant, lecturer, bureaucrat and statesman who served with the Indian Administrative Service. After serving in various positions in Madras and in various ministries of the Central Government, he served as the 18th Cabinet Secretary of India in 1989. He was appointed the 10th Chief Election Commissioner of India (1990–96) and became known for his electoral reforms. He won the Ramon Magsaysay Award for government service in 1996.

The Story

In 1955, T. N. Seshan joined the Indian Administrative Service as a trainee in the Tamil Nadu cadre, starting his career as an assistant collector in Coimbatore and sub-collector in Dindigul, where he managed grassroots administration.

🌍 Between 1966 and 1968, he earned a master's degree in public administration at Harvard University as an Edward S. Mason Fellow, forming a notable academic connection with Subramanian Swamy.
3From 1972 to 1976, Seshan served as joint secretary at the Department of Space, a critical period when India was advancing its satellite and space program.
4In 1989, he reached the pinnacle of bureaucratic service as India’s 18th Cabinet Secretary, overseeing the coordination of the entire civil administration under a politically turbulent government.
