Sumati Morarjee, also known as the first woman of Indian shipping, is credited to have become the first woman in the world to head an organisation of ship owners, the Indian National Steamship Owners Association which has been traditionally a male bastion. She has been awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian honor of India in 1971 for her civil services.

In 1923, at the startling age of 14, Sumati Morarjee was appointed to the managing agency of Scindia Steam Navigation Company, marking an early plunge into a male-dominated shipping world.

3In 1956, she shattered conventions by being elected president of the Indian National Steamship Owners Association, an organization historically dominated by men, and held the position again in 1957 and 1965.
4🚢 Under her leadership, Scindia Steam Navigation expanded its fleet to 43 vessels with a combined deadweight of 552,000 tonnes, establishing one of India's largest shipping firms by the mid-20th century.
