Shiv Kumar Sarin is an Indian physician; a hepatologist and, gastroenterologist. Under of Delhi Government, he set up the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS); the largest liver hospital and a deemed Liver University, and a WHO Centre. He has received Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, The World Academy of Science Prize, and Padma Bhushan in 2007. He served as Chairman Board of Governors of Medical Council of India and shaped the New Medical Education Vision, including NEET and NEXT exams.

🎓 In 1976, Shiv Kumar Sarin earned 7 gold medals in his M.B.B.S., a feat that set the stage for a career blending medicine and law, as he also secured a gold in L.L.B. studies.

🏥 In 2003, under his leadership, the Delhi Government established the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) in Vasant Kunj, which became the largest liver hospital and a WHO collaborating center in India.
3📜 Sarin’s 1997 publication in The New England Journal of Medicine introduced band ligation to prevent fatal variceal bleeding, a technique now used worldwide.
4🌏 Between 2012 and 2024, he founded and led the Asian Pacific School of Hepatology at ILBS and served as President of both the Asian Pacific Association for the Study of Liver and National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) of India.
