Chitre was a classmate of Nobel Laureate Roger Penrose at Cambridge, studying together in the early 1960s.

The Story

1
๐ŸŽ“ In 1956, Shashikumar Chitre graduated in Mathematics from Elphinstone College, Mumbai, and immediately won the Duke of Edinburgh Scholarship, propelling him to Cambridge's Peterhouse College by 1959.
2
At Cambridge, Chitre earned a second bachelor's by 1959, then a master's in 1960 as a Peterhouse Scholar, and completed his PhD in Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics by 1963 at Churchill College.
3๐ŸŒ From 1963 to 1966, Chitre lectured at University of Leeds, then took a fellowship at Caltech in Pasadena in 1966 before returning to India in 1967 to join Tata Institute of Fundamental Research.
4At TIFR, between 1967 and 2001, he focused on solar physics, notably studying the Sunโ€™s magnetic activity cycle and solar dynamo theory, expanding understanding of solar neutrinosโ€™ roles in the solar atmosphere.
