Designed the iconic Hall of Nations in New Delhi, completed in 1972.

Satish Gujral was an Indian painter, sculptor, muralist and writer of the post-independent era. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the second-highest civilian award of the Republic of India, in 1999. His elder brother, Inder Kumar Gujral, was the Prime Minister of India between 1997 and 1998.

🎨 In 1939, a young Satish Gujral sketched a bird on a tree branch that led him to join Mayo School of Arts in Lahore, marking the start of his artistic journey despite his hearing impairment.

Forced by recurring illness to leave Sir JJ School of Art in Bombay in 1947, Gujral’s education was interrupted just as India gained independence and faced the turmoil of Partition.
3🏛️ In 1952, Gujral earned a scholarship to study at Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, apprenticing with Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros, two giants of muralism, which deeply influenced his style.
4The trauma of Partition left visible scars in Gujral’s work, with exhibitions from 1952 to 1974 spanning New York, Berlin, Tokyo, and New Delhi, where his paintings and sculptures captured the pain and displacement of that era.
