Founded Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University, Lucknow, pioneering legal education in India.
Sarvagya Singh Katiyar, FRSC, popularly known as S. S. Katiyar, was an Indian scientist specializing in enzymology, and the founder Director of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University, Lucknow.
✨ A detail that surprised us
Katiyar was the first scientist to decipher the kinetic mechanism of the fatty acid synthetase enzyme complex during his postdoctoral research in the U.S. in the 1960s.
1. 🌍 In 1962, Sarvagya Singh Katiyar earned his PhD in chemical kinetics at the National Sugar Institute, Kanpur, under the mentorship of N. A. Ramaiah, a Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar awardee, setting the stage for his enzymology research.
2. 🔬 During the mid-1960s, Katiyar conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he was the first to determine the kinetic mechanism of the fatty acid synthetase complex, a critical enzyme in lipid biosynthesis.
3. 🎓 Returning to India, he joined IIT Kanpur's Department of Chemistry in 1961 and later became its Head in 1989, where he established the first biochemistry-biotechnology lab at the institute.
4. From 1994 to 2007, Katiyar served four consecutive terms as Vice Chancellor of Kanpur University (now Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University), the longest tenure in the university’s history, during which he initiated 50 new academic courses.
5. ⚖️ Beyond science, he was the founder Director of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University in Lucknow, contributing to the creation of a legal education institution while continuing his scientific pursuits.
6. Katiyar was a Fellow of multiple prestigious academies, including the Indian National Science Academy and the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK), reflecting his international scientific standing.
7. 🏅 He received Padma Shri in 2003 and Padma Bhushan in 2009 from the Government of India, recognizing his dual impact on science and higher education administration.
8. ❓ How did a scientist specializing in enzyme kinetics pivot to founding a national law university and shape multiple academic institutions across disciplines?
