Dr. Sanjaya Rajaram was an Indian-born Mexican scientist and winner of the 2014 World Food Prize. He was awarded this prize for his scientific research in developing 480 wheat varieties that have been released in 51 countries. This innovation has led to an increase in world wheat production – by more than 200 million tons – building upon the successes of the Green Revolution.

🌾 In 1943, Sanjaya Rajaram was born near Raipur village in Varanasi district, Uttar Pradesh, where his family farmed just five hectares growing wheat, rice, and maize, setting the stage for his intimate connection with agriculture.

By 1964, Rajaram earned a master's in genetics and plant breeding at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute under M.S. Swaminathan, a pivotal figure in India's Green Revolution.
3🚜 In 1969, he moved to Mexico to join CIMMYT, working alongside Norman Borlaug in El Batan, Texcoco, where he began his wheat breeding career.
4At just 29, in 1972, Rajaram became director of CIMMYT’s global wheat program, a leadership role he held for over three decades, spearheading the creation of 480 wheat varieties.
