Saalumarada Thimmakka, also known as Aala Marada Thimmakka, was an Indian environmentalist from the state of Karnataka, noted for her work in planting and tending to 385 banyan trees along a 4.5-kilometre (2.8 mi) stretch of highway between Hulikal and Kudur, Ramanagara district. She also planted nearly 8000 other trees.

A detail that
surprised us

Saalumarada Thimmakka personally carried water over four kilometres daily to nurture the first banyan saplings she planted in the 1950s.

The Story

1
In 1956, in the rural expanse between Hulikal and Kudur villages in Karnataka, Saalumarada Thimmakka and her husband began planting 10 banyan saplings along a barren 4.5-kilometre stretch of highway, a stretch that would soon turn green under their care.
2
🌱 Over the next three years, their tree count grew from 10 to 45, with Thimmakka personally carrying four pails of water for four kilometres each day to nurture the saplings, fencing them with thorny shrubs to protect from cattle.
3By 1990, after nearly four decades of relentless care, the couple had planted and nurtured 385 banyan trees valued at approximately 1.5 million rupees, transforming a dry roadside into a thriving green canopy.
4🌳 Despite no formal education and working as a quarry laborer, Thimmakka’s efforts earned her the National Citizen's Award in 1996, bringing national attention to her environmental devotion.

Thimmakka’s work transformed a desolate highway in Karnataka into a verdant corridor, prompting local and state governments to protect and maintain the trees she planted. Her story inspired environmental organizations such as Thimmakka's Resources for Environmental Education in the U.S. and led to academic honors like an honorary doctorate from the Central University of Karnataka in 2020.
