Satya Narayana Goenka was an Indian teacher of vipassanā meditation. Born in Burma to an Indian business family, he moved to India in 1969 and started teaching meditation. His teaching emphasised that the Buddha's path to liberation was non-sectarian, universal, and scientific in character. He became an influential teacher and played an important role in establishing non-commercial Vipassana meditation centers globally.

In 1955, in Rangoon, Burma, S.N. Goenka began vipassana meditation to relieve severe migraines, studying under Sayagyi U Ba Khin for 14 years before teaching.

🌏 In 1969, after retiring due to Burma's nationalization of businesses, Goenka moved to India and conducted his first 10-day Vipassana course in Kusum Nagar, Hyderabad.
3🏫 By 1976, Goenka established Dhamma Giri meditation center in Igatpuri, Maharashtra, which became a pivotal site for continuous 10-day courses and teacher training.
4📚 In 1985, he founded the Vipassana Research Institute at Dhamma Giri, which published the Pali Tipitaka texts in multiple scripts free of cost, expanding access to Buddhist teachings.
