Ramkinkar Baij

Baij’s monumental Yaksha and Yakshi sculptures, created in the late 1950s, took nearly a decade to be installed at RBI’s New Delhi building, reflecting a long gestation period for public modern art in India.

Baij’s anti-war paintings date back to 1942, predating many global modernist political artworks, showing early engagement with contemporary political crises.

Despite being a sculptor, Baij also painted 'Atomica' in 1969, a cubist oil work mourning the atomic bombing of Japan, revealing his multidisciplinary artistic concerns.

Baij transformed Indian sculpture by introducing indigenous materials like laterite and cement, challenging classical sculptural conventions, and embedding rural, tribal life into modernist art. His work at Santiniketan shaped a generation of sculptors who embraced social themes and contextual modernism. Institutional honors like the Padma Bhushan and Visva-Bharati’s Desikottama degree recognized his role in redefining Indian art beyond colonial and Western frameworks.
