The Story

1
In 1925, a 19-year-old Ramkinkar Baij left his humble Bankura village to join Kala Bhavana at Visva-Bharati University, sparked by a tip from nationalist journalist Ramananda Chatterjee.
2
🎨 By 1929, Baij completed his formal art training but defied Santiniketan’s norms, pioneering a raw sculptural style using cement, concrete, and laterite instead of traditional marble or bronze.
3🌾 In 1943, Baij responded to the Bengal Famine by sculpting 'Harvester,' merging social protest with modernist form, highlighting rural suffering through his art.
4🏛️ Between 1956-57, Baij sculpted the monumental Yaksha and Yakshi figures, commissioned by the Reserve Bank of India, which stand sentinel at RBI’s New Delhi headquarters, blending classical themes with his experimental style.
