Purushottam Das Tandon was a freedom fighter from Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. He is widely remembered for his opposition to the partition of India, as well as efforts in achieving the Official Language of India status for Hindi. He was customarily given the title Rajarshi. He was popularly known as UP's Gandhi.

The Story

In 1908, Purushottam Das Tandon began his law practice at Allahabad High Court under Tej Bahadur Sapru, but left in 1921 to dedicate himself fully to public service and the freedom struggle.

🌾 In 1934, he was elected President of the Bihar Provincial Kisan Sabha, highlighting his direct involvement with farmers’ movements amidst British colonial oppression.
3📜 Between 1937 and 1950, Tandon served as Speaker of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly for 13 years, overseeing debates during a turbulent pre- and post-independence era.
4✊ In June 1947, Tandon emerged as a rare dissenting voice in the Indian National Congress, opposing the Partition resolution vehemently at the All India Congress Committee meeting, calling it "an admission of weakness" and warning of fear for minorities on both sides.
