Developed India's first indigenous cryogenic engine technology for space launch vehicles.

Nambi Narayanan is an Indian aerospace scientist who worked for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). As a senior official at the ISRO, he was briefly in charge of the cryogenics division. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian award, in March 2019.

A detail that

“

Nambi Narayanan claims he had to educate ISRO founder Vikram Sarabhai himself on liquid propulsion technology during the early years of India's space program.

The Story

1
In 1969, Nambi Narayanan was deputed by the Government of India to Princeton University where he mastered chemical rocket propulsion under Luigi Crocco, returning with expertise that introduced liquid propulsion to India’s nascent space program.
2
🌌 At ISRO's Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station in 1966, Nambi began as a technical assistant, but soon was teaching Vikram Sarabhai, ISRO’s founder, the complexities of liquid propulsion technology that India had never developed before.
3🚨 In 1994, Nambi was arrested in Kerala on espionage charges alleging he sold rocket engine secrets to foreign agents, a scandal that stalled India’s cryogenic engine development for years before all charges were dismissed by the Supreme Court in 1996.
4🏛️ In 2018, after decades of battling legal and reputational damage, the Supreme Court awarded him ₹50 lakh in compensation; Kerala state added ₹1.3 crore in 2019, acknowledging the grave injustice he endured.

🌱 What changed because of them

Nambi Narayanan’s pioneering work on liquid propulsion laid the technical foundation for India’s indigenously developed cryogenic engines, critical for launching heavier satellites. His wrongful arrest delayed India’s cryogenics program by several years but also sparked reforms in protecting scientists and ensuring justice within government investigations. The compensation awarded and public recognition marked a rare institutional apology for a scientific professional’s ordeal in India.
