The Story
1. ๐ฟ In 1942, Mohan Dharia abandoned his medical studies at Fergusson College, Pune, to join the Quit India Movement, marking his entry into the freedom struggle.
2. As a lawyer at Bombay High Court in the 1950s, Dharia transitioned to politics, serving as Pune Municipal Corporation member (1957โ60) and leading its Transport Undertaking (1957โ58).
3. Elected twice to the Rajya Sabha (1964โ70, 1970โ71) as an INC member, he became General Secretary of Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee between 1962 and 1967.
4. โ๏ธ In 1975, Dharia openly opposed Indira Gandhi's Thirty-eighth Amendment, calling it 'a surrender of parliamentary democracy', which led to his detention during the Emergency alongside Morarji Desai and Chandra Shekhar.
5. After quitting Congress post-Emergency, he won the Pune Lok Sabha seat in 1977 as a Bharatiya Lok Dal candidate and joined the Morarji Desai Ministry as Union Minister of Commerce from 1977 to 1979.
6. ๐ณ In his later years, Dharia founded Vanarai, an NGO focused on environmental restoration and social work, earning the Padma Vibhushan in 2005 for his contributions.
