Malcolm Sathiyanathan Adiseshiah, was an Indian development economist and educator. In 1976 he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian award. In 1998, UNESCO created the Malcolm Adiseshiah International Literacy Prize in recognition of his contribution to education and literacy. He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament of India, in 1978.

In 1910, Malcolm Sathiyanathan Adiseshiah was born in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, into a family where his father was the first Indian principal of Voorhees College and his mother the first woman Councillor of Vellore Municipality, setting a unique intellectual and civic foundation.

๐ŸŒ At age 27, after earning his doctorate specializing in currency from the London School of Economics between 1937 and 1940, he returned to India to become the first professor and head of the economics department at Madras Christian College in 1940.
3โœˆ๏ธ From 1948 to 1970, he served as a top official at UNESCO, including as Deputy Director General from 1962, where he influenced international literacy policies that later inspired the creation of the Malcolm Adiseshiah International Literacy Prize in 1998.
