A detail that
surprised us

“

The TTK-Chitra heart valve, developed under Valiathan’s leadership, has seen over 100,000 implants, providing affordable cardiac care to millions who otherwise could not afford imported valves.

The Story

1
In 1990, at Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology in Trivandrum, Dr. M.S. Valiathan and his team implanted the TTK-Chitra mechanical heart valve, a device that took 12 years of development to produce a low-cost, indigenous solution for rheumatic heart disease patients in India.
2
🎓 By 1960, Valiathan had earned dual fellowships from the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Edinburgh and England, alongside a Master’s degree in surgery from the University of Liverpool, marking his early international medical training.
3🏥 Between 1960 and 1970, he trained extensively in cardiac surgery at prestigious U.S. institutions including Johns Hopkins, George Washington, and Georgetown University Hospitals, becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 1970.
4⚙️ The Chitra valve’s development was a saga of trial and error: initial prototypes failed due to weld embrittlement and material wear, until the fourth successful model used a cobalt-based superalloy housing and a sapphire disc, overcoming earlier mechanical failures.

🔍 One thing most people don't know

“

The Chitra heart valve’s early prototypes failed spectacularly: one model’s major strut fractured after only 100,000 cycles due to weld embrittlement, far below the expected 360 million cycles, forcing a redesign that took years to perfect.
