At age 12, Laxman Pai began his art journey by hand-coloring black-and-white photos at his uncle’s photo studio in Margao, long before formal art training.
1. 🎨 In 1946, a teenage Laxman Pai was arrested and beaten by Portuguese police during a satyagraha protest outside Margao Police Station, marking his early defiance against colonial rule in Goa.
2. In 1947, Pai graduated from Sir J. J. School of Art in Mumbai and won the Mayo Medal, a rare academic honor at the time, before starting to teach there.
3. 🚪 After refusing to denounce his friend F.N. Souza's controversial nude paintings, Pai was demoted and then expelled from Sir J.J. School of Art in the early 1950s, showing his commitment to artistic freedom.
4. ✈️ In 1951, Pai moved to Paris on the invitation of S.H. Raza, studied fresco and etching at École des Beaux-Arts, and held ten solo exhibitions in Paris over a decade.
5. In 1954, after an unwelcoming reception in India, Pai returned to Paris, eventually staging over 110 solo exhibitions worldwide including London, New York, and São Paulo between 1954 and 1985.
6. From 1977 to 1987, Pai served as principal of the Goa College of Art, influencing a generation of artists and promoting modern Indian art education.
7. 🏅 In 1985, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri, and later the Padma Bhushan, recognizing his unique fusion of Indian miniature style with modernism.
