The Story

1. 🌱 In 1969, Krishna Ella was born in Nemali, a small village near Tiruttani, Tamil Nadu, where his father worked as a farmer, planting the roots for his future in agricultural science. 2. In 1993, after earning a Ph.D. in plant pathology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Ella transitioned from academic research to entrepreneurship by co-founding Bharat Biotech in Hyderabad in 1996 with his wife Suchitra. 3. 💉 By 1999, Bharat Biotech had launched an affordable Hepatitis B vaccine, supplying millions of doses to over 65 countries, challenging the global vaccine pricing norms with a price point as low as $1 per dose. 4. Genome Valley, Hyderabad, now India's largest biotech cluster, owes its existence to Ella’s 1990s proposal to Andhra Pradesh’s then Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to create a biotech knowledge park, which started with Bharat Biotech as its inaugural tenant. 5. 🦠 Bharat Biotech, under Ella’s leadership, developed ROTAVAC, India’s indigenous rotavirus vaccine, and later Covaxin, the country’s first indigenous COVID-19 vaccine in collaboration with ICMR, delivering billions of doses worldwide. 6. In 2022, Krishna Ella and Suchitra Ella were awarded the Padma Bhushan, recognizing their combined efforts in biotechnology and vaccine innovation in India. 7. ❓ How did a scientist from a rural village transform India’s vaccine industry and influence global access to affordable immunization?
