Despite Malayala Manorama’s ban in Travancore, Cherian managed to reclaim and revive the newspaper in 1947, just as India gained independence.
1. In 1930, K. M. Cherian was forced to return from Madras to Kottayam when his father and relatives were arrested after a clash with Travancore Diwan Sir C. P. Ramaswami Iyer, marking a turning point in his involvement with Malayala Manorama.
2. 🌟 By 1947, after Malayala Manorama was banned and auctioned off, Cherian had cleared all family debts and successfully bought back the newspaper, reopening it the same year amid India’s independence.
3. In 1953, Cherian became Chief Editor of Malayala Manorama following his father’s death, leading the paper to become the top-ranked Malayalam daily and the fourth largest in India by circulation.
4. He held the chairmanship of the Press Trust of India and Indian and Eastern Newspaper Society during his career, influencing media beyond Kerala’s borders.
5. 🏦 Cherian also presided over the Kottayam Chamber of Commerce and Travancore Forward Bank, demonstrating his reach in Kerala’s business community beyond publishing.
6. His leadership extended to education, sitting on boards of Union Christian College, Aluva, and Mar Athanasious College, Kothamangalam, shaping academic institutions in Kerala.
7. 🏅 Awarded Padma Shri in 1965 and Padma Bhushan in 1971, Cherian was also honored with the Chevalier title by the Patriarch of Antioch, reflecting recognition from both secular and religious bodies.
