Kamal Ranadive trained alongside George Gey at Johns Hopkins University, who developed the famous HeLa cell line, before establishing tissue culture research in India.

The Story

1
In 1949, Kamal Ranadive earned her Ph.D. from Bombay University under V. R. Khanolkar, setting the stage for pioneering cancer research in India.
2
🌟 During 1960–1965 at the Indian Cancer Research Centre in Mumbai, she established India’s first tissue culture laboratory, innovating media and reagents preparation from scratch.
3Between 1966 and 1970, she served as acting Director of the Indian Cancer Research Centre, expanding cancer biology research into carcinogenesis, cell biology, and immunology.
4Her experiments with animal models revealed hormone-virus interactions increasing susceptibility to breast and esophageal cancers, reshaping understanding of cancer causation in the 1960s.
