The Story
1. 🥁 In 1955, a 17-year-old Hridaynath Mangeshkar lost his All India Radio job after composing music for Veer Savarkar’s controversial poem 'Ne majsi ne parat matrubhoomila, sagara pran talmalala'—a bold move that cost him a Rs 500 salary, then considered substantial.
2. When HMV released his composition of Surdas’s 'Nis Din Barsaat Nain Hamare' sung by Lata Mangeshkar in the same year, the song’s instant popularity gave him an unexpected early spotlight.
3. 🎼 Instead of riding on the family name, Hridaynath carved his own path by obsessively studying not only classical ragas but also the rhythms of Maharashtra’s Koli fishermen and the poetry of 13th-century saint Dnyaneshwar, weaving them into his music.
4. His 1982 album 'Dnyaneshwar Mauli' broke devotional music norms by setting ancient Marathi abhangs to complex meters that left even seasoned vocalists challenged—and sometimes frustrated—in the studio.
5. 📺 When composing for Doordarshan’s 'Phoolwanti', he insisted on using authentic folk instruments, refusing the studio’s request for modern synthesizers, creating friction but preserving the show’s sonic authenticity.
6. In 1990, his soundtrack for 'Lekin...' used traditional tunes and haunting melodies to capture the film’s ghostly atmosphere—earning a National Award citation that highlighted his creative risk-taking with old instruments.
7. 🙏 Despite being trained by Ustad Amir Khan, Hridaynath openly declared that his sister Lata was a greater influence on his work, a rare public admission in a family marked by formidable musical egos.

“
I was 17 years old and my salary was Rs 500 per month. It may be peanuts today but Rs 500 was considered a big fat salary during that time…but I was summarily fired from the All India Radio because I chose to create a musical composition for Veer Savarkar’s famous poem ‘Ne majsi ne parat matrubhoomila, sagara pran talmalala‘.
