✨ A detail that surprised us

Harivansh Rai Bachchan dropped his ancestral surname Srivastava and legally adopted 'Bachchan' in 1941 to oppose the caste system and name his family after his poetic pen name.

1. In 1907, Harivansh Rai Srivastava was born in Babupatti village, Uttar Pradesh, where his childhood nickname 'Bachchan' (meaning child) became his lifelong pen name.

2. 🌟 In 1941, after teaching English literature at Allahabad University, he traveled to Cambridge University to complete a PhD on W.B. Yeats, becoming one of the few Indians of his time to earn this degree abroad.

3. His breakthrough poem 'Madhushala' (1935) used the metaphor of a tavern to explore themes of life and existence, blending Hindi, Awadhi, and Urdu influences in a style that challenged traditional Hindi poetry norms.

4. After his first wife Shyama died of tuberculosis in 1936, his poetry shifted tone, but the arrival of his second wife, Teji Bachchan, in 1941 brought a new joyousness and sensuality to his works.

5. 🎬 Verses from his poem 'Agneepath' became iconic in Indian cinema, featured in the 1990 film starring his son Amitabh Bachchan and the 2012 remake, symbolizing perseverance and defiance.

6. In 1976, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Bhushan for his literary achievements, recognizing his role in shaping modern Hindi poetry.

7. 🌐 Between 1966 and 1972, he served as a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha, intertwining his literary influence with public service.
