Harindranath Chattopadhyay

Harindranath’s divorce from Kamaladevi was the first legal separation granted by Indian courts, marking a rare legal milestone in India’s marital laws.

English poet Laurence Binyon once said Harindranath “has drunk from the same fount as Shelley and Keats,” comparing him to Romantic poets despite his Indian thematic focus.

His poem Rail Gaadi became a beloved children’s song on All India Radio and was memorably sung by actor Ashok Kumar in the film Aashirwad (1968).

Harindranath Chattopadhyay bridged classical Indian culture with modern English literature, influencing Indian academic curricula with poems like Shaper Shaped. His role in early Indian cinema and music introduced English lyrics and children's rhymes to Hindi films, enriching cultural expression. Politically, as a Lok Sabha member from Vijayawada, he represented leftist ideas during the formative years of Indian democracy, while his association with Kamaladevi helped spearhead revival of indigenous crafts and women's leadership.
