The Story

1
In 1935, Grace Morley took charge as curator—and soon director—of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, where she orchestrated over 100 exhibitions annually by the 1940s, including shows from New York’s MoMA and Peggy Guggenheim’s Manhattan gallery.
2
🎨 Between 1935 and 1958, Morley introduced pioneering programs at SFMOMA: the first film series at an American museum called “Art in Cinema,” art rental galleries, public art libraries, and art history courses to make art accessible to the broader public.
3In 1926, before her museum career, she earned a doctorate in art and literature from the University of Paris, a rare achievement for a woman at that time, after teaching herself French in high school in California.
4During World War II, Morley served as a cultural adviser for the U.S. State Department and the Bureau of Inter-American Affairs, shaping American art diplomacy from 1940 to 1945.
