Serving as the first Chief Minister of Assam from 1946 to 1950, leading the state through independence.

Gopinath Bordoloi was an Indian politician and independence activist who served as the 1st Chief Minister of Assam from 1946 to his death in 1950. He was also the chairman of North-East Frontier Tribal areas and Assam Excluded and Partially Excluded Areas Sub-Committee. He was a follower of the Gandhian principle of non-violence as a political tool. Due to his unselfish dedication towards Assam and its people, the then Governor of Assam Jayram Das Doulatram conferred upon him with the title "Lokpriya".

The Story

In 1907, Gopinath Bordoloi passed matriculation and entered Cotton College, then affiliated with the University of Calcutta, setting the stage for his academic and political career in Assam.

🎓 By 1914, he had completed his M.A. from the University of Calcutta and soon after began practicing law in Guwahati in 1917, after a brief stint as headmaster of Sonaram High School.
3✊ In 1922, Bordoloi was jailed for a year due to his active role in the Non-cooperation Movement, demonstrating his early commitment to Gandhian non-violence and Indian independence.
4🏛️ Despite winning 38 seats in the 1936 Assam Regional Assembly elections, Bordoloi led the Congress opposition refusing to form a government due to restrictive laws limiting ministerial powers.
