1. In 1933, at just 10 years old in Sialkot, Dharampal Gulati dropped out of school and took on various jobs including carpentry and rice trading before joining his father's spice shop, Mahashian Di Hatti, known locally as Deggi Mirch Wale.
2. ๐ถ๏ธ By 1947, his family fled Partition violence, relocating from Sialkot to a refugee camp in Amritsar, then to New Delhi, where he bought a tonga for โน650 and struggled as a tangawalla before returning to the spice business.
3. In 1958, Gulati resurrected Mahashian Di Hatti in Delhiโs Karol Bagh with a small wooden stall, advertising in the Hindi newspaper Pratap to revive the brand.
4. ๐ By 1959, he had established a manufacturing unit in Kirti Nagar, pioneering ready-to-use ground spices at a time when most Indians ground spices at home, redefining Indian cooking convenience.
5. In 1965, he formally registered the company as MDH, which eventually grew to 18 manufacturing facilities and reported revenues of โน10.95 billion in 2018, making it a household name.
6. ๐ In 2019, the Indian government awarded him the Padma Bhushan, recognizing his role in popularizing packaged spices and branding himself as the iconic turbaned figure on millions of MDH packets.
7. Beyond business, he founded 20 schools and a 200-bed hospital in New Delhi, also donating PPE during the COVID-19 pandemic, intertwining philanthropy with enterprise.
