Datto Vaman Potdar was sometimes called the 'Dr. Johnson of Maharashtra' because of his encyclopedic knowledge and ability to converse fluently in Sanskrit, a rare skill among historians of his time.
1. In 1910, Datto Vaman Potdar co-founded the Itihas Sanshodhak Mandal in Pune with Sardar Mehendale and V.K. Rajwade, a pioneering effort to collect and preserve Marathi historical documents.
2. 🌟 Between 1912 and 1920, he rose from teacher to Head Master at Nutan Marathi Vidyalaya, his alma mater in Pune, before becoming a professor at New Poona College in 1921, where he worked until 1935.
3. Potdar mastered Sanskrit and Persian, skills that enabled him to research rare historical manuscripts about the Maratha Empire, traveling extensively across India for this purpose.
4. 🎓 Appointed Vice-Chancellor of University of Pune from 1961 to 1964, he steered academic programs amid post-independence educational reforms in Maharashtra.
5. In 1946, the British colonial government honored him with the title Mahamahopadhyaya, and in 1967, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Bhushan, recognizing his scholarship.
6. Despite government commissioning him in 1965 to write Shivaji’s biography, Potdar passed away in 1979 before completing the work, leaving that chapter of history open for debate.
7. 🏠 He survived the devastating 1961 Panshet flood in Pune, which destroyed his wada in Narayan Peth, a personal loss amidst his lifelong bachelorhood.
