Chhannulal Mishra was an Indian Hindustani classical music singer from Banaras. He was an exponent of the Banaras gharana school of Hindustani classical music, especially Khayal and Purab Ang (Thumri). He won the Shiromani Award of Sur Singar Sansad, Bombay; the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi Award; the Naushad Award of U.P. Govt; the Yash Bharti Award of U.P; Sangeet Natak Academy fellowship by Government of India; and the Bihar Sangeet Shiromani Award.

The Story

In 1936, Chhannulal Mishra was born in Hariharpur, Azamgarh district, a village reputed for musicians, where his father Badri Prasad Mishra first taught him music.

🎶 By the 1950s, he trained under Ustad Abdul Ghani Khan of the Kirana gharana and later learned from Thakur Jaidev Singh, blending Banaras and Kirana gharana styles seamlessly.
3In 1960, Mishra began performing publicly, championing the Banaras gharana’s Khayal and Purab Ang Thumri styles, and quickly gained acclaim for his distinctive gravelly yet moltenly mellow voice.
4🏆 In 2000, he received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, followed by the Padma Bhushan in 2010 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2020, marking decades of sustained excellence recognized by India’s highest honors.
