The Story

1
🌆 Born in Secunderabad in 1930, Charles Correa studied architecture at the University of Michigan (1949–53) under Buckminster Fuller and earned his master's at MIT by 1955, blending Western modernism with Indian sensibilities.

🏛️ In 1958, he launched his own practice in Mumbai and soon designed the Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya at Sabarmati Ashram (1958–63), a museum that innovatively used open courtyards to evoke Gandhi’s spirit.
3🏢 Between 1961 and 1966, Correa created Mumbai’s Sonmarg Apartments, his first high-rise project, pioneering climate-responsive design with open terraces and natural ventilation tailored to Indian conditions.
4🌿 As Chief Architect of New Bombay (Navi Mumbai) from 1970 to 1975, he planned a satellite city to ease Bombay’s congestion, envisioning sustainable urban spaces, though bureaucratic hurdles limited its full realization.
