He was a descendant of the Maharaj family of Kathak dancers, which includes his two uncles, Shambhu Maharaj and Lachhu Maharaj, and his father and guru, Acchan Maharaj. He also practised Hindustani classical music and was a vocalist. After working along with his uncle, Shambhu Maharaj at Bhartiya Kala Kendra, later the Kathak Kendra, New Delhi, he remained head of the latter, for several years, until his retirement in 1998 when he opened his own dance school, Kalashram, also in Delhi.

Birju Maharaj began teaching Kathak at just 13 years old at Sangeet Bharti in New Delhi, a remarkably young age for a classical dance guru.
1. 🌟 In 1945, at the age of just seven, Birju Maharaj gave his first solo Kathak performance in West Bengal, marking the early public emergence of a scion of the Maharaj family lineage of dancers.

4. In 1986, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest civilian honor, recognizing his influence as head of the Kathak Kendra in New Delhi, where he shaped generations of dancers until his retirement in 1998.

6. After retiring from the Kathak Kendra, he founded Kalashram in Delhi in 1998, a dance school that continues to nurture Kathak artists globally, preserving the Kalka-Bindadin gharana style.
