Bhimsen Gururaj Joshi, also known by the honorific prefix Pandit, was one of the greatest Indian vocalists in the Hindustani classical tradition from the Indian subcontinent. He is known for the khayal form of singing, as well as for his popular renditions of devotional music. Joshi belongs to the Kirana gharana tradition of Hindustani Classical Music. He is noted for his concerts, and between 1964 and 1982 Joshi toured Afghanistan, Italy, France, Canada and USA.

The Story

🎶 In 1933, at just 11 years old, Bhimsen Joshi left his home in Ron, Karnataka, armed with only borrowed train fare and a fierce determination to find a guru, marking the start of his rigorous musical pilgrimage across India.

Under the mentorship of Sawai Gandharva from 1936 to 1940 in Kundgol, Joshi absorbed the Kirana gharana style, which shaped his khayal singing and breath control techniques that would define his performances.
3🌍 Between 1964 and 1982, Joshi expanded Hindustani classical music's reach internationally, performing in countries like Afghanistan, Italy, and the USA, where he became the first Indian musician to have concerts advertised on New York City posters.
4Joshi’s devotion extended to organizing the Sawai Gandharva Music Festival annually in Pune from 1952 onwards, transforming it into a premier event that continues to celebrate his guru’s legacy and the Kirana gharana tradition.
