Begum Aijaz Rasul was the only Muslim woman among the 28 Muslim League members to join the Constituent Assembly of India in 1946, a rare political stance during the Partition era.
1. ๐ In 1937, Begum Aijaz Rasul won a non-reserved seat in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, breaking barriers as one of the few women to do so during the era of the Government of India Act 1935. 2. From 1937 to 1940, she served as Deputy President of the UP Legislative Council, and by 1950, she became the Leader of Opposition, the first Muslim woman worldwide to hold this position. 3. In 1946, Begum Rasul was the only Muslim woman elected to the Constituent Assembly of India, where she joined the Minority Rights Drafting Subcommittee and led Muslim League members after Chaudhry Khaliquzzaman left for Pakistan. 4. Despite her zamindar background, she actively supported the abolition of zamindari and opposed separate electorates based on religion, advocating for a united democratic framework in post-independence India. 5. ๐๏ธ After the Muslim League dissolved in India in 1950, she joined the Congress party and served as Rajya Sabha member (1952-54), and later as Minister for Social Welfare and Minorities in Uttar Pradesh from 1969 to 1971. 6.
