The Story

1
🎤 In 1936, at the 600th anniversary of the Vijayanagara Empire held in Hampi, a 19-year-old Basavaraj Rajguru gave his first public concert alongside his guru Panchakshari Gawai, marking his entry into the classical music world.
2
After the death of his guru Gawai in 1944, Basavaraj relocated to Bombay, where he began learning from Sawai Gandharva, a Kirana gharana stalwart, though this was cut short due to Gandharva's paralysis, leading Rajguru to study under Sureshbabu Mane instead.
3🌏 Rajguru's pursuit of mastery took him beyond India’s borders to Karachi in then North West Pakistan, where he studied under Latif Khan for six months, connecting with the lineage of his original guru's guru, Waheed Khan.
4By blending styles from Kirana gharana and influences from his varied teachers, Rajguru developed a repertoire that spanned Khyal, Vachanas, Thumri, Ghazal, and Natyageet, performing in eight different languages, a rare linguistic and stylistic versatility at the time.
