Balwant Moreshwar Purandare, popularly known as Babasaheb Purandare, was an Indian historian and writer of books and plays from Maharashtra, India. His works are mostly based on the life of Shivaji, the 17th-century founder of the Maratha Empire; as a result he is called Shiv-Shahir. He is mostly known for his popular play on Shivaji, Jaanta Raja. Purandare also studied the history of the Peshwas of Pune.

In 1930, at just seven years old, Babasaheb Purandare's family fled Pune due to a plague outbreak, relocating near Sinhagad Fort where his father narrated vivid tales of Shivaji's exploits, sparking a lifelong obsession with Maratha history.

📜 By the late 1950s, Purandare had published "Raja Shivchhatrapati," a detailed 900-page work that brought previously obscure letters and documents about Shivaji to light, reshaping how Maharashtrians understood their warrior king.
3🎭 In 1985, his play "Jaanata Raja," featuring over 200 actors alongside elephants, camels, and horses, premiered and has since been staged over 1000 times across India and internationally, including the US, blending historical drama with grand theatrical spectacle.
