Balwant Moreshwar Purandare, popularly known as Babasaheb Purandare, was an Indian historian and writer of books and plays from Maharashtra, India. His works are mostly based on the life of Shivaji, the 17th-century founder of the Maratha Empire; as a result he is called Shiv-Shahir. He is mostly known for his popular play on Shivaji, Jaanta Raja. Purandare also studied the history of the Peshwas of Pune.

✨ A detail that surprised us

Babasaheb Purandare's play "Jaanata Raja" includes live elephants, camels, and horses on stage, a rarity in Indian theatre, performed annually since 1985.

1. In 1930, at just seven years old, Babasaheb Purandare's family fled Pune due to a plague outbreak, relocating near Sinhagad Fort where his father narrated vivid tales of Shivaji's exploits, sparking a lifelong obsession with Maratha history.

2. 📜 By the late 1950s, Purandare had published "Raja Shivchhatrapati," a detailed 900-page work that brought previously obscure letters and documents about Shivaji to light, reshaping how Maharashtrians understood their warrior king.

3. 🎭 In 1985, his play "Jaanata Raja," featuring over 200 actors alongside elephants, camels, and horses, premiered and has since been staged over 1000 times across India and internationally, including the US, blending historical drama with grand theatrical spectacle.

4. 🏆 In 2015, Maharashtra awarded him the Maharashtra Bhushan, the state's highest civilian honor, followed by the Padma Vibhushan in 2019, reflecting decades of scholarship and cultural influence tied closely to Shivaji's legacy.

5. Beyond Shivaji, Purandare explored the Peshwa era, utilizing his noble Purandare family archives to preserve and donate ceremonial weaponry and documents, anchoring academic and museum collections in Pune.

6. His early career included work as a journalist under Acharya Atre and active participation in the Liberation of Dadra and Nagar Haveli from Portuguese rule, linking his historical interests with nationalist activism.

7. ❓ How did Purandare’s blend of family heritage, dramatic arts, and political engagement challenge academic resistance to portraying Shivaji as a Hindu protector during a time when such views were marginalized?
