Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi was an Indian architect. He is an important figure in Indian architecture and noted for his contributions to the evolution of architectural discourse in India. Having worked under Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn, he was a pioneer of modernist and brutalist architecture in India.

The Story

In 1951, Balkrishna Doshi moved to Paris to work as a senior designer under Le Corbusier, contributing to the iconic Mill Owners' Association Building and Villa Sarabhai in Ahmedabad from afar.

🌍 Returning to India in 1955, he founded Vastu-Shilpa Consultants in Ahmedabad, pioneering low-cost housing solutions like the Aranya project in Indore, which won the Aga Khan Award in 1995.
3In 1962, Doshi established the School of Architecture in Ahmedabad, shaping generations of architects and integrating education with practical urban planning.
4🏛️ Between 1977 and 1992, he designed the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, a sprawling campus blending brutalist concrete with open courtyards adapted to India’s climate.
