A detail that
surprised us

“

Baldev Singh taught himself electronics in the 1940s to build a device capable of recording brain electrical activity in animals, decades before such equipment was common in Indian hospitals.

The Story

1
In the early 1930s, after training at the National Hospital, Queen Square in London with neurologists like Russell Brain, Baldev Singh returned to India and chose to practice medicine in a village near Amritsar, a decision that isolated him from major medical centers yet fueled his independent research on brain electrical activity.
2
🎛️ Battling limited resources in the 1940s, Singh engineered his own apparatus to record the electrical activity of animal brains, pioneering neuroelectronic tools in India long before EEGs became mainstream in Indian hospitals.
3His 1950 trip to Chicago to study epilepsy patients under neurologist Percival Bailey marked a turning point, as he brought back advanced EEG techniques that would become critical in surgical treatments for epilepsy in India.
4At Vellore in 1952, Singh supervised the EEG monitoring during India's first epilepsy surgery performed by Jacob Chandy, a tense moment where his recordings guided a groundbreaking operation on a 19-year-old patient with infantile hemiplegia.
