In 1962, as the India-China war erupted, Bala V. Balachandran was pulled from his teaching role at Annamalai University to serve as a commissioned officer in the Indian Army, where he rapidly rose to Captain, balancing military duty and academia simultaneously.

🎓 A month-long USAID workshop in Chennai in 1966 changed his destiny when Dr. Landis Gephart awarded him a full scholarship to pursue advanced studies in the US, propelling him from a village near Pudukottai to American academia.
3At the University of Dayton by 1970, Balachandran was teaching industrial engineering, but he pushed further, earning an MBA and PhD in Operations Research from Carnegie Mellon before settling at Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management in 1973.
4🏫 Despite his flourishing career in the US, he nursed a bold ambition to bring world-class management education to Tamil Nadu, which materialized in 2004 when he founded Great Lakes Institute of Management in Chennai while still a Kellogg professor.
