B. V. Sreekantan

He was an associate of Bruno Rossi at MIT, linking Indian cosmic ray research directly to one of the key figures in early X-ray astronomy and particle astrophysics in the US.

Sreekantan’s research group at TIFR initiated the first Indian efforts to detect Cherenkov light from very high energy gamma-ray showers in the atmosphere at Ooty, laying groundwork for later observatories like MACE at Hanle.

After retiring from TIFR, Sreekantan shifted his focus to consciousness studies and philosophy, organizing seminars at NIAS that explored connections between quantum physics and Upanishadic ideas of one-ness.

Sreekantan established the foundation for high-energy cosmic ray and gamma-ray astronomy research at TIFR, which continues to influence Indian astrophysics and detector technologies. His leadership helped position TIFR as a hub for experimental particle physics, while his later philosophical work fostered interdisciplinary dialogue between science and Indian philosophical traditions, especially at the National Institute of Advanced Studies.
