B. V. Sreekantan

Born 30 June 1925 ยท Karnataka โ€” Died 27 October 2019

Developed pioneering cosmic ray research techniques at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research.

Badanaval Venkatasubba Sreekantan was an Indian high-energy astrophysicist and a former associate of Homi J. Bhabha at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR). He was also a Dr. S.

A detail that
surprised us

โ€œ

He developed all the required electronics himself for his very first experiment measuring muon lifetime at TIFR, showcasing rare expertise in both physics and instrumentation in 1950s India.

The Story

1
In 1948, B.V. Sreekantan moved from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore to Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai, to work under Homi J. Bhabha on cosmic ray physics, marking a pivotal shift to experimental high-energy astrophysics.
2
๐ŸŒŒ During the 1950s, he conducted deep underground experiments at Kolar Gold Fields, Karnataka, at a depth of 2760 meters, searching for cosmic-ray-produced muons, pioneering particle detection in extreme subterranean conditions.
3In 1975, Sreekantan became director of TIFR, where he initiated India's first high-energy cosmic ray and gamma-ray astronomy projects, including balloon and rocket-borne X-ray and gamma-ray detectors launched from Hyderabad and SHAR.
4๐ŸŽ“ Between 1987 and 1992, he served as the Indian National Science Academyโ€™s Srinivasa Ramanujan Professor, shifting focus towards scientific philosophy and consciousness studies, blending physics with ancient Indian thought at the National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bangalore.

๐Ÿ” One thing most people don't know

โ€œ

In the 1950s, Sreekantanโ€™s experiments at Kolar Gold Fields operated nearly 3 kilometers underground, a depth chosen to shield detectors from cosmic noise, enabling pioneering studies on elusive particles like muons and neutrinos.

๐Ÿ†ACHIEVEMENT

Sreekantanโ€™s research group at TIFR initiated the first Indian efforts to detect Cherenkov light from very high energy gamma-ray showers in the atmosphere at Ooty, laying groundwork for later observatories like MACE at Hanle.

๐Ÿ‘คPERSONAL

After retiring from TIFR, Sreekantan shifted his focus to consciousness studies and philosophy, organizing seminars at NIAS that explored connections between quantum physics and Upanishadic ideas of one-ness.

๐ŸŒฑ What changed because of them

Sreekantan established the foundation for high-energy cosmic ray and gamma-ray astronomy research at TIFR, which continues to influence Indian astrophysics and detector technologies. His leadership helped position TIFR as a hub for experimental particle physics, while his later philosophical work fostered interdisciplinary dialogue between science and Indian philosophical traditions, especially at the National Institute of Advanced Studies.
