Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar was an Indian teacher of yoga and author. He is the founder of the style of yoga as exercise called "Iyengar Yoga", and was considered one of the foremost yoga gurus in the world. He was the author of many books on yoga practice and philosophy including Light on Yoga, Light on Pranayama, Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and Light on Life. Iyengar was one of the earliest students of Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, who is often called "the father of modern yoga".

โœจ A detail that surprised us

B.K.S. Iyengar began practicing yoga at age 15 to overcome tuberculosis and was once so weak he had to lift his own head with effort.

1. In 1934, a frail 15-year-old B.K.S. Iyengar was summoned by his brother-in-law, the yogi Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, to Mysore to improve his health with yoga, marking the unlikely start of his transformation from sickness to strength.

2. ๐ŸŒŸ By 1937, at just 18, Iyengar was sent to Pune to spread yoga teaching, a city where he would anchor his lifeโ€™s work and eventually develop the precise and prop-assisted Iyengar Yoga style.

3. Despite early neglect and skepticism from Krishnamacharya, Iyengar mastered difficult postures, often practicing for hours to overcome his spindly limbs and poor health, revealing a relentless discipline behind his yoga mastery.

4. ๐Ÿ“š Iyengar published 'Light on Yoga' in 1966, a book that not only detailed over 200 yoga postures but also became an international yoga manual, translated into multiple languages and inspiring generations worldwide.

5. ๐Ÿ… His contributions were recognized with three Padma awards by the Indian government: Padma Shri in 1991, Padma Bhushan in 2002, and Padma Vibhushan in 2014, underscoring decades of dedication to yoga.

6. Iyengar's innovation included the use of propsโ€”belts, blocks, chairsโ€”to make yoga accessible to people of all ages and abilities, fundamentally changing how yoga was taught globally.

7. ๐ŸŒ In 2004, Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world, a rare honor for a yoga teacher from Karnataka, India.

8. โ“ How did a sickly boy from Bellur, battling tuberculosis and malnutrition, become the architect of a yoga style practiced by millions and embraced by diverse religious traditions worldwide?
