Bhabesh Chandra Sanyal commonly known as B. C. Sanyal, the doyen of modernism in Indian art, was an Indian painter and sculptor and an art teacher to three generations of artists. During his lifetime he not just saw the partition of the Indian subcontinent three times, 1905, 1947 and 1971, but also witnessed 20th century Indian art in all its phases.

The Story

In 1929, B. C. Sanyal was commissioned by a Punjabi firm to sculpt a bust of Lala Lajpat Rai in Lahore, a work that anchored him in the city and launched his pivotal teaching career at the Mayo School of Arts.

🎨 By 1936, Sanyal resigned from the Mayo School of Arts under British pressure, labeled a “trouble-maker,” and founded the Lahore College of Art in 1937, nurturing modern Indian art until Partition in 1947.
3🚶‍♂️ After the 1947 Partition, Sanyal moved to Delhi and converted his studio at 26 Gole Market into a “refugee studio,” which became a vibrant hub for artists and gave rise to the Delhi Shilpi Chakra.
4🖼️ His 1949 participation in the Salon de Mai in Paris and 1953 Venice Biennale marked rare international showcases for Indian modern art of the time.
