Ashoke Sen

Born 15 July 1956 · West Bengal

Developed S-duality in string theory, a fundamental symmetry concept in theoretical physics.

Ashoke Sen FRS is an Indian theoretical physicist and ICTS-Infosys Madhava Chair Professor at the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS), Bangalore. A former Distinguished Professor at the Harish-Chandra Research Institute, Prayagraj, He is also an honorary fellow in National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) India. He is also a Morningstar Visiting Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a Distinguished Professor at the Korea Institute for Advanced Study. His main area of work is string theory.

A detail that
surprised us

Ashoke Sen was nominated to the Royal Society Fellowship in 1998 by Stephen Hawking, a rare endorsement from the legendary physicist.

The Story

1
In 1975, Ashoke Sen graduated from Presidency College, Kolkata, where he was deeply influenced by Amal Kumar Raychaudhuri’s teaching, a spark that shaped his future in theoretical physics.
2
🌟 By 1998, Sen had earned a Fellowship at the Royal Society, nominated by Stephen Hawking himself, recognizing his groundbreaking work in string theory.
3In 1992, Sen published his landmark paper introducing S-duality, a concept that revealed hidden symmetries linking seemingly different string theories into a unified framework.
4🌌 Sen’s pioneering Sen conjecture about unstable D-branes and tachyon condensation redefined how physicists understand the decay of these exotic objects, influencing string cosmology deeply.
