Arvind Parikh

Parikh’s Baithaks are not mere concerts but structured dialogues with musicians discussing gharana nuances and teaching methods, a format he pioneered to preserve musical heritage with minimal bias.

He trained continuously under Vilayat Khan for 60 years, from 1944 until Khan’s death in 2004, an unusually long guru-shishya relationship sustaining deep stylistic fidelity.

His wife, Kishori Parikh, was a disciple of Kirana Gharana stalwarts Niaz Ahmed and Faiyaz Ahmad, linking two major classical vocal traditions within one family’s musical fabric.

Arvind Parikh helped institutionalize the Baithak format, creating spaces for musicians to openly discuss Hindustani classical music’s evolving contexts. His leadership roles in UNESCO’s International Music Council and the Indian Musicological Society fostered cross-cultural dialogues and research, while his archival publications preserved vital compositions for future generations. His coordination of the All India Musicians’ Group bridged Carnatic and Hindustani traditions, influencing policy and support for classical music.
