He was killed in action in the Battle of Basantar during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971 where his actions earned him the PVC. A biopic on Arun Khetrapal, titled Ikkis, is released, with Agastya Nanda in the lead role.

1. In 1971, during the fierce Battle of Basantar in the Shakargarh sector, Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal led his Centurion tank through a heavily mined field to support infantry, a move that risked his entire squadron but was essential to hold the bridgehead.
2. 🎖️ Commissioned into the 17 Poona Horse on 13 June 1971, Khetarpal was only 21 years old when he faced one of India’s most critical tank battles, where he destroyed 10 enemy tanks, earning the title of 'tank ace of aces.'
3. Born on 14 October 1950 in Pune, Khetarpal came from a lineage of soldiers, including a grandfather who fought in World War I and a great-grandfather in the Sikh Khalsa Army, linking him to a century of military tradition.
4. 📚 At the National Defence Academy, joining in June 1967 as part of the 38th Course, he was Squadron Cadet Captain of Foxtrot Squadron, leading them to championship victory, showing early signs of leadership and tactical skill.
5. During the intense night of 15 December 1971, despite incomplete mine clearance, the 17 Poona Horse charged through to reinforce Indian troops, a maneuver that proved decisive but cost Khetarpal his life the next day on 16 December.
